I started a new class!
SVSlearn.com’s “Gesture Drawing“, by Brooklyn Walker.
SO AWESOME!
But first. How do you pronounce gesture?
I think it’s one of those words that I read in books first and started pronouncing it wrong in my head before I heard how it was supposed to be pronounced. And now it’s so ingrained that I have to really, really, really think about it before I make a shot at saying it the right way.
I pronounce it: “Guess-ture.” You make body motions for others to guess at what you’re saying. Makes complete sense. As opposed to “Jesture”, which brings to mind a jester, and confuses me.
Onward.
I really like g… (it’s a hard G, people) gesture drawing. I think this is what I intuitively go to when I try to draw things. The meaning behind a pose, instead of the anatomy. I feel like these little critters I’ve been working on have been great practice for this class.
In fact, I thought I’d combine my need to learn to draw monkeys and alligators for the June SVSlearn illustration prompt, with my need to practice g… jestures. Gestures.
The assignment was to look at a model, come up with a line of action (how a line would flow through the figure), then name the g.esture. Use both verb and adverb to help focus your pose and action.
