So. Much. To. Learn.
I watched the critique area for the May SVSLearn challenge yesterday. They took some great pieces of art, tore them apart, and showed us how they could be better.
It was amazing.
I was reminded that there is so much I don’t know how to do.
Also, I was watching a bunch of the CBPro classes yesterday while I worked on my illustrations.
Oh. Man.
I’ll say it again. So. Much. To. Learn.
The challenge, I think, is not to do it all right now. I’m just not there yet. The challenge, for me, is to keep going. To keep learning. Even though I know that there are [many, many, many] areas I need to improve in.
So, I’m entering the June Critique Arena contest with my little Albert the Arctic Fox. Will he win? Nope. Will he get in the top 16? Nope. Did I make a [fairly] consistent character that filled the requirements for the contest? Yup! This is where I’m at, and while I’m looking forward to improving, I’m celebrating my little wins while I work towards the big ones.
Meet Albert:
The challenge is:
“Meet Albert! He’s furry, fun, and always getting into trouble.
Follow the adventures of this mischievous mammal in this new series of books for kids.
Your assignment is to design a new character that will be in books, a PBS animated series, stuffed animals, and a learning app for kids.
The character’s name is Albert. He’s a young mammal of some kind. You pick!
Albert is furry and the size of a kindergartener. Albert was a wild animal that is now living with a family. He is learning how to have manners, how to be responsible, make friends, and how to help out around the house.
He’s cute, playful, a little mischievous, and kind.
He should have some item of clothing on him, like a hat, shirt, pants, shoes. But ONLY one.
What we want from you is a character design sheet for Albert.
Every entry must have 5 color drawings on ONE page:
- 1 neutral pose front, 3/4 view
- 1 neutral post back, 3/4 view
- 1 walking or running pose
- 1 sitting pose (ground or chair)
- 1 close up of face
What can you do to make the character stand out from ALL the other designs of furry friends for children you’ve seen? Think of the character’s background, personality, wants, and needs. All of these attributes will play an important role in the creativity of your design.”
Over here if you want to play this month too! https://www.critiquearena.com/current-challenge
