It’s Monday.
I’m happy!
…I know, weird for a Monday. But I spent the last three days recovering from hitting my head, and I’m feeling pretty great today.
So I bring you….
…a happy bat.
I was trying out some brush type pens I bought for Inktober. I went through an old sketchbook and found a full picture to try and ink up. Still no idea if I’m doing things right, but, I’m happy to try.
Look, I did cross-hatching! I think!
My thoughts: I really like this process.
For my animals with verbs, I spent FOREVER getting the outlines just right. Over and over and over and over (and over) again. Until things were colouring book worthy. Which is cool, because now I have a bunch of images I could use for a colouring book. However, I LOVE the looser, um, emotional (?) charge of hand drawn pictures. It’s kind of like poetry compared to an educational text. Both are good, but you can convey different things with poetry than you can with a text book, and you invite the reader on a different experience as well.
I’ve mentioned how much I love Diane Goode’s illustration work in Ninja Baby, right? (And David Zeltser told a pretty great story too. Definitely worth a read)
I have aspirations. Which is part of the reason I am really looking forward to Inktober!
Original sketch. This was me trying to figure out eyes and facial proportions. Apparently the face I drew was more batlike than human, so I went with it.
Happy failure 😉
