Write-On-Con

Hey! This was (and is, as I’m currently enjoying my time-traveler’s ticket) FANTASTIC!

https://www.writeoncon.org/schedule/

I listen as I draw, and then stop drawing constantly as I have to make notes.

So far my favourite bits:

-There is room and need for YA length but MG content books (YAY! These are they types of books our family devours, and that I want to write. We love the heft and adventure of large books, but don’t want to have to edit as we read aloud to our family (with kids aged 4-14)). Plus I appreciated the consideration that everyone grows at their own pace, and shouldn’t be forced into an audience age range that they’re not ready for yet.

-Think of picture book planning as 16 spreads instead of 32 pictures. I mostly agree with this, but I also like using the page turn as a tool for suspense, or for a joke punchline, or even just a pause. Still, 16 spreads sounds like a lot less work… 😉 .

-Agents prefer a steady worker instead of the magical writer who is famous with one book. Excellent. I’ve got lots done and lots to come! Steady is my favourite too.

Those are just the bare highlights. So much more to listen to! I highly recommend it.
